Observation Narrative
Soils of this bouldery, lower-slope concavity are fertile (high Ca, Mg, Mn) and support a mixed forest of Quercus spp., Carya ovalis, Acer saccharum var. saccharum, and Fraxinus americana. Several nutrient-demanding species, including Cercis canadensis var. canadensis, Ostrya virginiana, Ulmus rubra, and Lindera benzoin, are prominent in the understory. Herb cover is surprisingly sparse but it is difficult to assess the relative degrees to which the bouldery substrate, heavy deer grazing, and the late sampling date contribute to this condition.
Plot location: just upslope from the White Oak Canyon - Cedar Run connecting trail, at a point 0.2 mi. N of its jct. with the Cedar Run Trail.
